Life and History of John Edward Watson

Longtime Wilmington-talk show host John Watson has died.

The announcement was made by a member of his family.

Watson, a broadcast engineer by training, brought a smooth professional style to his talk show, which came during a quarter of a century career at WILM.

The show helped cement the AM station’s unique status as a news-talk station with an audience that included residents of Wilmington, as well as business, education and community leaders in northern Delaware.

John Watson has firsthand knowledge about the fight for desegregation. He has some thoughts on the ACLU complaint over charter schools in Delaware.

In the 1950’s we fought a hard fight for public school desegregation. The KKK was busy trying to frighten us into giving up with nighttime gun and rifle attacks in some states. There were church bombings killing children, and cross burnings in many places. But it didn’t work.

I witnessed some of that fight while at my high school, R.R. Moton, in Farmville, Va. We have a picture of a cross burned at our school. We were a part of the desegregation battle along with four other groups, including a group from Delaware. We know it today as the successful the Brown vs. Board Supreme Court ruling on May 17th, 1954. Chief Justice Earl Warren led the court in its unanimous vote desegregating public education....

John Edward Watson, son of the late Archie Watson and Cora Lee Silverton, departed this life on June 22, 2019, at Christiana Hospital at the age of 85 years. John was formerly married to Helen C. Watson of Fishkill, NY and later married Elizabeth M. Watson, who preceded him in death. He was most famous for his local John Watson Radio Show and for his part in laying the groundwork for the renowned Brown v. Board of Education case which ended segregation.
